The old adage “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” is particularly true in regards to building performance. Heat, air, and moisture flows are not necessarily intuitive or recognizable without the use of specialized diagnostic equipment. These same building dynamics can cause comfort problems and waste energy, all of which is easily avoided if the guess work is eliminated.

Blower Door and Duct Testing

Blower Door Testing
A Blower door is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the airtightness of buildings and to help identify air leakage locations. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. Knowing the airtightness of buildings helps us predict energy usage and anticipate ventilation needs to ensure adequate air exchange rates.

Infrared Thermal Inspections

Infrared imagers when used in conjunction with a bower door fan can reveal otherwise hidden air leaks, insulation problems and bypasses.

In some new construction scenarios we can use this technology to inspect for air leakage prior to wallboard and in all cases prior to finish trim detail. This pre-emptive approach is an easy way to ensure project goals are meet.

Contract us to schedule a new home performance test. If the home is being constructed under the North Carolina High Efficiency Residential Option New Homes Program there are incentives available.

Duct Testing
Home Energy Check provides duct testing services to help HVAC contractors and builders comply with the new energy codes.
Our field staff is highly experienced at testing, troubleshooting, and finding duct leakage and has provided duct training services for contractors. Using a duct testing rig and smoke puffer we depressurize the duct system to locate any leaks and measure leakage for code compliance. The calibrated fan and manometer provide the information needed to determine if the system meets code, based on the size of the home. If for any reason the system is not in compliance we can work with your crews or subcontractor to rectify the problem areas.
